What is a headshot photo?

A headshot is a close-up image of a person's face, typically taken from the shoulders or chest up. It's commonly used for professional purposes, like acting portfolios, corporate websites, LinkedIn profiles, or other business-related contexts. The goal of a headshot is to present a clear, well-lit, and flattering image of the subject, conveying their personality and professionalism.

Key features of a headshot include:

  • Simple background: Often a neutral or plain background to keep the focus on the person. I have white, black, and gray backdrops / the idea is not to have any distractions other than your beautiful face.
  • Natural expression: A friendly, approachable, or confident look, depending on the context.
  • Good lighting: Soft, even lighting that highlights the face without harsh shadows.
  • Dress and grooming: Professional attire and neat grooming that suits the purpose of the headshot. This means ironed and clean attire just like you are going to work.

Headshots are typically used to make a first impression, so they're important for creating a positive, professional image.

  • Set your goals with the photographer:  Please discuss the vision you have in mind. What do you want to portray in the headshot? Be open to receiving feedback from your photographer, especially for inputs about what image goes to what medium. For example, a serious face can be used to convey professionalism of an industry versus a photo in your email signature with a smile, this conveys a warm and welcoming personality.

Preparation for your photoshoot day

  1. Clean and iron clothes / choose clothes that suit you well so you feel good! Start with solid colors. (Consider your brand color palette.)
  2. For women, consider V necks for lengthening the neck.
  3. Selection of accessories like watches, studs, cuff links, and rings.
  4. Clean hands and nails, trimmed or manicured; sometimes, the hands can be in the photo, which is better to prepare.
  5. Hair color is seen very well; therefore, consult your stylist for touch-up color and haircut.
  6. Use clean and soft make-up just to enhance your beauty unless you are in the show business industry.
